The description of the illness: Sometimes we feel dispirited or are down, have a bad mood. Not always it is a depression, since depression is a serious medical illness that involves the brain and does not go away for a long time. Depression starts between the ages of 15 and 30. Women suffer from depression much more often than men. Sometimes it occurs after delivering of a baby. Some people get seasonal affective disorder in the winter. Depression is effectively cured by antidepressants and talk therapy. Most people do best by using both. Aromatherapy is effective when used as a Complementary therapy, assisting other therapies.

Symptoms of the illness: sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy, change in weight, difficulty sleeping or oversleeping, energy loss, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of death or suicide.

Essential oils used for treatment: basil, bergamot, cedarwood, clary sage, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, jasmine, myrrh, neroli, rose, sandalwood, spruce, orange, and ylang ylang.

The treatment: 1. An aromatic bath two to three times per week.
2. An aromatherapy massage is one of the best ways to treat nervous system ailments.
3. Inhalation: apply a small amount of essential oil onto the back of the hands and chest area. Inhale the essences from your hands after application to the skin. Apply two or three times daily.

Safety Issues: You should understand that aromatherapy can help only in mild forms of depression. For example, it eases mental fatigue and help with sleep. If a person is severely depressed, additional support and therapy are necessary.
