Essential oils are natural oils of plants, their flowers, bark, leaves, fruits or roots. Essential oils have scent or flavor of the original plant. They are commonly used in perfume, flavorings and traditional medicine.
You can experience extracting essential out of orange - peel and squeeze it. Orange peel contains large quantities of oil, it is one of the cheapest oils to buy. Rose petals have very little oil, so rose essential oil is one of the most expensive. Most rose oils you buy have no therapeutically effect, in some cases they are toxic, as they constitute mixture of rose essential oil and man-made chemicals. Essential oils are very concentrated and must be diluted before using.
Pure essential oils are generally aromatic and good for health. Each of the essential oils has specific properties, so they can treat different deceases. Essential oils may be poisonous if you take them internally. They do not serve for internal use. So keep them aside so children and animals could not take them. Using essential oils in specific conditions such as pregnancy, diabetes, skin allergies and epilepsy must be discussed with aroma therapist before using them.
Tips for using essential oils as therapeutic cure: • Pure essential oils are diluted with pure vegetable carrier oil such as almond, grape seed or jojoba oil to apply on skin. • Dilute oils with water for full body baths and footbaths. • Some essential oils such as angelica, bergamot, lemon and lime can make skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light and thus, skin need special care after treating it with such oils. • Essential oils with higher potency level such as fennel, hyssop, sage and wintergreen should be used in smaller doses while milder oils such as rose, lavender and chamomile should be used in comparatively greater quantities. • Essential oils should never be ingested and need to be kept away from delicate body parts such as eyes and mucous membranes. • Specific health ailments need proper diagnosis and advise from a licensed medical practitioner rather than trying to remedy them with essential oils away. • Do not use essential oils in pregnancy and stop using them in case they cause redness, burning, itching or skin irritation.
Use of Essential Oils Baths: Add 5-10 drops into your bath. Massage: Add 10-15 drops of essential oil to 40-70 drops to 100ml massage oil. Steam inhalation: Place 3-6 drops of an essential oil of your choice into a bowl of boiling water, cover your head over the bowl and breathe in the steam. Room burners: Put 3-6 drops of essential oils in some water in the bowl of the burner. Skin and hair care: Add essential oils to your creams, lotions and shampoos to enhance their therapeutic actions. Mix 10-20 drops of essential oil to 100ml of shampoo, creams or lotions. For Babies and Children: When using with children, always dilute essential oils in a good quality base oil 5 first.
