Antiseptic - a substance that inhibits the proliferation of infectious microorganisms
Antiviral – a substance that destroys or inhibits the growth and reproduction of viruses
Aromatic – a substance that has a strong aroma or smell
Carrier – a substance (vegetable oil, crème, lotion, gel, shampoo, etc.) used to dilute concentrated essential oils before using them
Cold press – a physical process used for extracting vegetable and some essential oils from citrus fruit
Compress - a soft, cloth pad used to provide pressure or to supply moisture, cold, heat, or medication
Concrete – a solid or semisolid material obtained from plant material by using a solvent
Essential oil - a volatile oil, which usually has the characteristic odor or flavor of the plant from which it is obtained, used to make perfumes and flavorings
Fixed oil – a vegetable, non-volatile oil
Hydrosol (hydrolat, hydrolate, distillate water or floral water) – a substance obtained from water or steam distillation of a flower or a herb, which contains most of the water soluble molecules (hydrophilic) from the plant or flower material that did not distil into the essential oil.
Infusion - a solution produced by steeping or soaking a substance (usually in water)
Naturopathy - a system or method of treating disease that employs no surgery or synthetic drugs but uses special diets, herbs, vitamins, massage, etc., to assist the natural healing processes and emphasized the body potential to treat diseases using self-correcting mechanisms.
Olfaction – the sense of smell
Phototoxicity – pigmentation or any other skin irritation reaction when exposed to ultra-violet light because of using some medicine at the same time (or certain essential oils, e.g., Bergamot oil)
Phytotherapy – herbal medicine or treatment of diseases by using the healing power of plants
Rectification – a process of re-distillation when from some essential oils particular constituents are removed
