Inhalations in aromatherapy are used for a variety of reasons starting from respiratory problems (e.g. sinusitis, bronchitis, hay fever, post nasal drip and finishing with the emotional states disorders (stresses, bad moods, depressions, etc.).
Steam Inhalation
For a steam inhalation you will need about half a liter of water. Boil it and let it cool for 10-15 minutes.
Dosage: Depending on the problem you want to treat, you can add from 2 to 5 drops of an essential oil or a combination of 2-3 oils (however, keep the total amount of drops not higher than 5-6). After that inhale the vapors for approximately 10-15 minutes. To keep better concentration, you may as well put something like towel or bedspread over your head.
Frequency of Application: For medical purposes the inhalations may be done 2-3 times a day.
Precautions: KEEPING EYES CLOSED IS VITAL, in order not to cause their irritation.
Handkerchief
Either handkerchief or a paper tissue may be used for inhaling the aromas of essential oils.
Dosage: Usually 2 to 4 drops of an essential oil are placed on a piece of cloth and deeply inhaled 2-3 times.
Frequency of Application: 6-7 times a day (sometimes more often to keep the upper respiratory tracks clear).
Placing 2-4 drops of an essential oil on your pillow case will lessen your breathing problems during your sleep.
